A Case of Actinomycosis after Incision of Peritonsillar Abscess

Abstract
|

|
Actinomycosis is a disease caused by an anaerobic bacteria called Actinomyces species (predominantly Actinomyces
israelii), which is a common and normally nonpathogenic organism found in the oral cavity and upper gastric tract. The infection usually presents three distinct localizations as cervicofacial, thoracic, abdominopelvic area. Actinomycosis is difficult to diagnose because of variable presentation and fastidious nature of the organism in culture and general lack of familiarity with the disease. The sulfur granule defines the pathognomic pathologic finding of actinomycosis, but it has been reported in only 40% of cases. We present a case of actinomycosis of infraparotid area after peritonsillar abscess, who was incised on peritonsillar area.
